Wood Poles Enhance St. Louis Zoo Entryway
The St. Louis Zoo was recently voted America’s Top Free Attraction and admits nearly 3 million visitors each year. With that large of an audience, lighting requirements not only need to be functional, but they also need to
work with the overall surroundings and themes within the zoo. In 2008, the St. Louis Zoo reached out to our local agent to improve the south entrance walkway.
To match the turn of the century style of the existing pedestrian bridge, the agent was tasked with combining modern lighting solutions with an aged and industrial feel. Utilizing Tehomet wooden poles from Valmont Structures, we were able to achieve these aesthetic requirements. The 18 wood square tapered poles paired with dark bronze fixtures and bases are enhanced by the scenery around
them; manicured vegetation and dark bronze railings and bridges. The arms and attachment brackets were custom made for this job to provide a similar engineering style as the bridge.
Thanks to Valmont’s streamlined manufacturing processes and commitment to on-time delivery, we were able to match the lead times of the custom built arms and brackets allowing for a smooth and quick installation process. After the installation, the zoo explained how this project opened their eyes to how the lighting, pole design, and pole material can enhance
themes within the park.
