Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard Goes from Napkin to Reality
From napkin to conception, great ideas can start small, and when realized, take hundreds of people with a variety of specializations to finalize. Our business demonstrates this by utilizing the expertise of each group in our organization to successfully manage, develop and produce excellence in every project.
In the planning stages of the Naval Ship Yard project the customer gave product development a rudimentary sketch, illustrating their design needs. With very little detail, the group was given the task of designing a product which was cost effective and easy to assemble. Finite Element Analysis was run on the 3D models to ensure that the final design was structurally sound. The project was then passed to Valmont's Supportive Work and Tasks Team (SWATT) for management and drafting responsibilities. Working together, the custom and regional drafting teams created submittal drawings. After approval, a total of 97 new part and assembly drawings were created. Following fabrication and paint, the structures were assembled to eliminate any fit up issues. The final product was shipped to the customer and assembled with ease. These steps ensured that the customer received a product of the utmost quality, and they were pleased with the final result.
The collaboration of many departments, made this project flow efficiently, from concept to production. Every day, the people and teams within our division make huge impacts to the overall success of every project, no matter the complexity of the order.
