Telescopic Poles Preserve Skyline
Home to the distinguished Miami Open tennis tournament, Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, FL approached Valmont with a vision of telescopic lighting poles for its tennis center. With a solid background in sports lighting solutions, Valmont’s engineering team began planning the new poles in 2009.
To minimize the visual impact on the coastal skyline, the poles were designed to extend vertically from 25ft to 45ft only when games are in process. Since the poles were to be installed close to the ocean, the customer also selected a protective V-PRO finish with an extended 15-year warranty to keep the salty water from corroding the poles. Valmont drew on its global resources and engineering expertise to tackle this unique project. In order to manufacture the poles, custom machinery and tools needed to be built – a task which Valmont’s internal tooling company quickly addressed. In addition to constructing the poles and testing their dynamic features, the engineering team transformed a traditional fuel trailer into a DOT-compliant lifting system, utilizing hydraulics to extend the poles.
In 2010, Crandon Park installed 14 self-contained, extendable poles. Valmont’s engineers were able to provide a solution that preserved the Key Biscayne skyline and met the needs of the facility.
