Valmont’s Decorative Poles Become the Streetscape Standard in Marion, IA
With the goal of making its aging and scattered Uptown area better for pedestrians, motor vehicles and business owners, the City of Marion finalized its Uptown Streetscape Plan in 2011. Since lighting played a big role in the planned enhancements, the city partnered with Valmont to create a unique set of street and traffic lighting poles.
Marion wanted the poles to preserve the historic past and concurrently help with the city’s rebranding. Because the structures needed to accomplish many things - lighting, wayfinding, and traffic signals - Valmont’s engineers optimized each pole type based on its unique conditions. Taller poles with more fixtures, such as the street and traffic signal poles, were made of steel, galvanized and coated with a high-technology paint system for improved durability. Vice versa, the shorter pedestrian poles were made of aluminum and finished in what is now the standard Marion Black. Finally, the luminaire arms and decorative bases provided continuity with the custom fixtures, and banner arms offered a place for the city’s branding and seasonal messages.
As a result of Marion’s visionary leadership and Valmont’s custom engineering expertise, the Uptown area now boasts a cohesive and special appearance. Because the finished products and service met the city’s needs precisely, Valmont’s poles have now become Marion’s new streetscape standard. Valmont looks forward to helping the city further as the improvements endure.
