Valmont Poles Light Up the New Sellwood Bridge in Portland, OR
After several years of traffic issues and structural problems, Oregon’s Multnomah County decided that it was time to replace the old and crumbling Sellwood Bridge. Valmont, with its reputation as the trusted market leader and demonstrated expertise, was instantly selected as the partner for lighting the new bridge.
With safety and sustainability top-of-mind, Valmont’s engineers designed the poles to address the County’s three major concerns: seismic conditions, wind vibration, and corrosion. Given the geological challenges and wind conditions in the region, the poles were made of steel and constructed to meet the latest seismic and wind vibration standards. To combat rust and corrosion, since the area has over 300 rainy days each year, the poles were galvanized and finished painted with a copper brown top coat. This finish matched the bridge’s color scheme and provided added protection against moisture.
The engineers, designers, and neighborhood committee loved Valmont’s poles and utilized the original design through all phases of the decade long project. Due to the County’s commitment to sustainable construction and Valmont’s custom engineering capabilities, a total of 40 elegant and durable poles will light the way across the Willamette River for many years to come.
