Revitalizing the Gene Leahy Mall Through Custom Lighting Solutions
The City of Omaha launched the Omaha Riverfront Revitalization project to revive 72 acres of park land along the Missouri River in the downtown area. Earning the Envision® award for sustainability along with a Platinum sustainability rating in 2021, this project continues to reconnect the downtown parks to the Missouri River. In June of 2022, the Gene Leahy Mall (GLM) was completed as part of the Riverfront Revitalization Project.
The designers for GLM, Atelier Ten and OJB, needed a versatile lighting solution to meet the many needs of the project. Many different smart devices and speakers were to be mounted on various poles throughout the park, and the designers had a unique vision which included custom made poles of varying sizes. Atelier Ten and OJB Landscape Architecture partnered with our agent, Central Sales Lighting Alliance, to complete the lighting for the GLM. In the end, Valmont Structures provided solutions to the series of complex pole requirements presented by the designers.
Custom Round Tapered Steel poles of various sizes fill the park, accessorized by our Dart Round Clam Shell Base Cover. Starting at 18 feet on the edges of the park, these custom poles increase in size to 25 feet as you near the center. 45-foot feature poles line the Downtown Green, tying the design together for a dramatic archway of light poles. Also lining the Downtown Green near the stage are our custom-made projector poles for local multimedia shows and events. A Grey Brown finish builds upon the natural and contemporary themes for the area lighting covering the rest of the park.
Valmont engineered custom poles to support Span Wire and catenary lighting along the 11th Street Promenade. These poles are framed by a historic archway with their unique lighting and bright, custom orange paint color add vibrancy to the area. These poles are also decorated with our Banner Arms for a customizable feature.
