The Valmont® Bridge System Spreads to New Mexico
In early 2020, the US Army Corps of Engineers approached Valmont Structures to provide an alternate superstructure to an already specified 60’ long, three-sided concrete arched culvert. Our product, The Valmont Complete Bridge Solution, not only increased hydraulic flow but also came in at a lower cost. In August 2020, the US Army Engineer District, Fort Worth, released the solicitation of contract. The low bid contractor was determined to be Weldin Construction, LLC, who chose to utilize the Valmont Complete Bridge Solution for their construction project.
By December of 2020, Valmont Structures was on contract to provide their innovative Complete Bridge Solution. The 70’ span x 25’ wide bridge had to be designed to comply with NMDOT Standard Specifications, utilize NMDOT Standard steel railing and accommodate MLC 50 (Military Class) tracked vehicles.
After rigorous design review by Weldin’s own consultant (LBYD Engineering) and the USACE, the U-BEAM™ press-brake-formed steel tub girder design was approved for fabrication at Valmont’s facility in Omaha, NE. Once fabrication was complete, the steel U-BEAMs were also galvanized in house and sent on to Tricon Precast in Houston, TX, for the precast deck to be installed. Final delivery to Ft. Wingate occurred on April 11th, 2022, and the U-BEAM™ units were installed the following day.
